The Origins of the Mickey Waffle
The story of the Mickey Waffle began in the 1950s when Disney introduced the very first Disneyland park in Anaheim, California. To enhance the overall experience for guests, Disney culinary experts sought to create a unique breakfast item that would capture the essence of the magical world they were building. Thus, the Mickey Waffle was born.
The Mickey Waffle is not your ordinary breakfast fare – it's a culinary masterpiece designed to bring joy to Disney visitors of all ages. The waffle iron used to make these iconic treats was custom-made, featuring the unmistakable silhouette of Mickey Mouse. This attention to detail ensures that every bite is infused with the spirit of Disney magic.

Each park puts its spin on this beloved breakfast item, creating unique and delightful variations reflecting local flavors and cultures. Let’s Get to the Good Stuff: What We Believe to Be the Original Mickey Waffle Recipe
Developed in 1937, patented, and deemed “America’s Favorite Waffle,” the mix is a blend of malt and vanilla, which creates a golden brown exterior and fluffy interior. If you ask any Disney connoisseur, they’ll tell you this is the recipe and for a valid reason. There are numerous reports that Disney Imagineers worked with the Golden Malted to perfect the Disney recipe, and you may even find some Reddit posts with photos of Golden Malted boxes in the back of Disney vans on Disney property.
Following the Golden Malted recipe perfectly and setting your Mickey waffle iron to the appropriate settings, you’ll create pristine Mickey Waffles at home!
The following recipe makes six waffles.
Equipment:
Mickey Waffle Iron (this one makes 3 Mickey and 3 Minnie waffles)
Ingredients:
5oz water
1 whole egg
1 cup Golden Malted Waffle Mix
2 tbsp of melted, unsalted butter
Pam or other cooking spray, optional
Powder sugar, optional
Whipped cream, optional
Strawberries, optional
Maple syrup
Instructions:
Turn on your Mickey waffle iron and set it to the notch just above the “Light” setting.
Beat 1 egg in 5oz of water.
Add 1 cup of the Golden Malted Waffle Mix to the egg-water mixture and stir until well blended. The lumps are okay.
Add 2 tbsp of melted unsalted butter to the waffle mixture and stir until blended. Again, lumps are okay.
The Mickey waffle iron linked here is nonstick and works perfectly without cooking spray. If preferred, or if using an alternative waffle iron, spray the iron with cooking spray.
Pour the batter into the very center of each Mickey (or Minnie) head and allow it to spread evenly. Use a heat-resistant spatula if needed to spread the batter evenly. I recommend spooning the batter into a dispenser or measuring cup versus pouring directly from the mixing bowl.
Following the waffle iron's directions, close, lock, and turn the iron.
Once the iron beeps or notifies you that the waffles are done, turn, unlock, and open the waffle iron.
Plate your waffles with powdered sugar, whipped cream, strawberries, and maple syrup.
Enjoy!
